Have you ever been to Monkey Beach dive site in Puerto Galera Philippines? If not come with me and we’ll discover this Puerto Galera diving location together. Puerto Galera is becoming a popular tourist destination over the years. Now is the best time to come and enjoy its great beauty.

Monkey beach dive site is located east of Sabang bay, only a 10-15 minute boat rides away from Muelle Port. If you are here in Puerto Galera looking for some amazing diving spots you will definitely want this site on your bucket list and here we will explain why. Keep reading!

Monkey Beach Marine Life

The Monkey Beach dive site in Puerto Galera has a gradual slope to 18 meters with a sandy bottom. You will find a 20-foot long yacht laying on her port side. This great site offering more than just the colorful coral and dense marine life here. A home for anthias, damselfish, snapper, batfish, Moorish idol, gobies, and basslets. This site offers a great array of sea life for those who would like to see as much as they can all in one site this location can’t be beaten.

Wrasses, trigger, pufferfish, cods, and lionfish are also common in this area and out in abundance almost every day here.

Along the hull, you can also see a scorpionfish and nudibranch as this is where these types of marine life tend to hang out the most on this wreck. When the current is present, there are sweetlips, common jacks, and emperor fish patrolling the area hunting for their prey.

In mid-water, there are schools of fusiliers and long-jawed mackerel swimming randomly. It makes this dive site more alive than some of the other wrecks you may find dotted around the Philippines islands.

Monkey Beach Dive Site

Here at Monkey Beach, a short drift over densely populated hard and soft coral reefs can be experienced in a short distance thanks to the amazing terrain and consistent currents found here. Banded sea snake, moray eel, and green sea turtle can be part of your dive while cruising along the ocean bottom as well.

Generally, the current flow can be from the east or west side of this dive site bringing you further without exerting effort. While kicking making it the perfect dive site for those who want to stay down longer while using the least amount of oxygen possible.

East Current

If the current is going east you will reach Ernie’s. A gradual drop of a rock formation at about 16 meters where there is a crevice where giant grouper (Ernie) lives. Cardinalfish are so dense and they are somewhat pinned down at the entrance.

They don’t move much unless you get closer to them. If you have a dive torch, point it into the crevice and you will find a reflecting eye of small shrimps and sometimes baby lobster at this location as well.

West Current

If the current is going west toward Sabang Bay you can also make your drift this way. It will bring you to Sabang point with little to no effort on your part. Towards the end of Sabang point, you will need to exert a little effort to swim against the current. Get sheltered to the short wall at the end due to the formation of this area.

The current here is sometimes unpredictable, especially during a big tidal change. So be aware of your surroundings and the conditions at all times. Have a proper dive plan before beginning your journey so that everyone in the group is well aware of the currents and proper safety guidelines to get the most out of this amazing dive site.

Best for Refresher Dives

Monkey Beach is the best dive site for divers that have not been diving for very long. The open water portion of the Discover Scuba diving program can also be done here. This dive site is a go-to spot for those working on their certification here in Puerto Galera.

Towards the end of the dive, a short swim to a shallow area of 5 meters is where you will most likely resurface after this experience is over. The growth of flora and fauna are so abundant and there are huge rock formations found here where you can find staghorn corals. Some barrel sponges where you can enjoy while doing your safety stop as a bonus.

During your ascent, stay close to your divemaster. Be cautious, look up and listen as there are plenty of diving boats passing by picking up or dropping divers down here at Monkey Beach. Once at the surface you may ask to swim towards deeper water so that the boat can easily pick you up.

We recommend not to carry all your equipment so it is convenient for you to climb up the ladder. Our boat crew is always ready to help carry all your equipment to the boat.
