At BADLADZ in Puerto Galera, Philippines, we recently had the pleasure of hosting an incredible group of martial artists from Germany. This dedicated team had traveled all the way to the Philippines with one goal in mind—to train and earn certification in Arnis under the guidance of three esteemed Filipino Grand Masters.

Arnis, also known as Eskrima or Kali, is the national martial art of the Philippines. With roots tracing back to pre-colonial times, was originally developed for self-defense and combat strategy. Today, it stands as a globally respected discipline, combining intricate stick, blade, and empty-hand techniques with profound cultural significance. Watching these passionate students practice at BADLADZ was a true testament to the enduring legacy of this ancient art.

Ancient Baybayin Language
One fascinating aspect of their training was an emphasis on Baybayin, the pre-colonial Filipino script. As part of their curriculum, the students were required to learn how to read and write in this ancient writing system, which was primarily used in Luzon for recording the Tagalog language and other Philippine dialects. The term “Baybayin” comes from the Tagalog word “baybay,” meaning “to spell.” This added layer of cultural immersion connected the students not only to the physical techniques of Arnis but also to the rich linguistic heritage of the Philippines.

Puerto Galera provided the perfect setting for this unique experience. Surrounded by lush tropical landscapes and crystal-clear waters. It offered an inspiring environment for deepening their skills and understanding the history of Arnis. BADLADZ has always been a hub for adventurers and martial artists alike, and we were honored to be a part of this incredible journey.

The combination of expert instruction, stunning scenery, and cultural immersion. Makes Puerto Galera the ultimate destination for learning and mastering this revered martial art.
